Google released two Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech models that support over 100 languages and can copy a voice from a 30-second sample.
Voice copying needs a spoken consent recording from the voice owner, and every clip carries a SynthID watermark. Google says voice copying through AI Studio is not available in India.
Two models for two jobs
Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS and Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS. Flash TTS is built for detailed creative direction and character voices. Flash-Lite TTS is built for low-cost, high-volume work such as dubbing, audio content and voice agents. Both are rolling out in the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, where the audio playground has a two-speaker screenplay editor.
Voices and controls
Users can choose from more than 2,000 ready-made voices, including regional varieties, or describe a new voice in plain words: its role, accent and character. Saved voices can be reused across projects.
Scripts can carry stage directions for pace, acting and dialect, tags for sounds such as <laughs> or <sigh>, and listening sounds such as |mhm|. One script can stage two speakers taking turns. Google says quality and tone stay steady across hours of audio, for podcasts and audiobooks.
Copying a voice, with limits
Voice replication needs a 30-second sample of your own voice or one you have the rights to use. The voice owner must also record spoken consent that matches the sample. Every clip from these models carries an inaudible SynthID watermark, and copied voices also get C2PA content credentials.
Google says voice replication through AI Studio is not available in India, the UK, the European Economic Area, Switzerland, Illinois or Texas.
Where else it appears
Flash TTS is in Gemini Notebook and Flash-Lite TTS is in Google Vids, for everyone. Access through Gemini Enterprise is coming soon, and so is a voice remix tool for changing pitch, pace and accent. Google says the models took top places in several languages, including Hindi, in the Voice Arena listener test. Google's post does not give prices.
How to try it
- Open Google AI Studio and use the audio playground, which includes a two-speaker screenplay editor.
- In code, call the Gemini API with gemini-3.8-flash-tts for directed, expressive speech, or gemini-3.8-flash-lite-tts for high-volume jobs.
- Without code, use Flash TTS in Gemini Notebook or Flash-Lite TTS in Google Vids.
- Google's launch post does not list prices, so check the cost in your Google account before a large job.
How to get good results
Our practical advice, based on what the sources below say about it.
- Pick the model by the jobUse Flash TTS when you need character voices and close control of the delivery. Use Flash-Lite TTS for dubbing, voice agents and other high-volume work, which is what Google built it for.
- Direct the performance in the scriptWrite stage directions for pace, acting and dialect, and add tags such as <laughs> or <sigh> and listening sounds such as |mhm|. For dialogue, write a two-speaker script and let the model handle the turns.
- In India, design a voice instead of copying oneVoice replication through AI Studio is not available in India. You can still pick from over 2,000 ready-made voices or describe a new one by role, accent and character.
- Save voices for a seriesSave a custom voice and reuse it, so a podcast, course or audiobook sounds the same from one episode to the next.
- Expect a watermark on every clipEvery clip carries an inaudible SynthID watermark. Plan for that and tell your listeners when a voice is AI-generated.
Why it matters in Tamil Nadu
Builders in India can use the standard voices for narration and voice agents, but not the voice-copying feature for now.
