AI data centres in Tamil Nadu

Chennai is one of India's biggest data centre markets: Cushman & Wakefield counted 214 MW running there in the first half of 2026, with 368 MW more coming. AI computing is now arriving, from a 20 MW Vultr GPU cluster to L&T's AI factory for Together AI. The state plans its own GPU cluster, and startups can get help with GPU bills today.

How much capacity Chennai has

Cushman & Wakefield counted 214 MW of operational data centre capacity in Chennai in the first half of 2026, and 368 MW of upcoming supply. (Cushman & Wakefield)

JLL counts a little differently, so always name the report when you quote a figure. JLL says Chennai supplied half of the 85 MW added across India in the first half of 2026. (JLL, India data centre mid-year report 2026)

Two years earlier, JLL put Chennai at 108 MW in June 2024 and expected 134 MW more by 2026, with another 130 MW planned for 2027-28. (JLL)

Where AI computing is being built

Vultr announced a 20 MW AI cluster in Chennai using AMD Instinct MI355X chips in October 2026. It did not say how many chips or which data centre will host them. (CXOToday (Vultr and AMD release))

L&T's Vyoma.AI won an order from US firm Together AI to build capacity for 10,000 NVIDIA B300 chips at its Chennai campus. L&T describes the campus as gigawatt-scale, with a first phase designed for 250 MW, and gave no date for it to go live. (Larsen & Toubro)

Sify's Chennai 02 campus in Siruseri opened in April 2025, is planned to reach 130 MW, and is certified by NVIDIA for liquid cooling at up to 200 kW per rack. (Evertiq, Sify release (via Nasdaq))

CapitaLand's Chennai 01 in Ambattur was inaugurated by Chief Minister Vijay on 15 Oct 2026 and is due to be completed by the end of 2026. It is planned at 53 MW of gross power (34 MW for IT) with about Rs 1,940 crore of investment, and CapitaLand describes it as AI-ready. (DT Next, DatacenterDynamics, DQ India, W.Media)

The Sovereign AI Park

Tamil Nadu and Sarvam AI signed an MoU on 13 Jan 2026 for a Sovereign AI Park in Chennai, with an initial Rs 10,000 crore and over 1,000 jobs expected. It is planned to hold high-performance computing, secure data systems, model research labs and an Institute for AI in Governance. (Business Today)

MediaNama reports that a plot near IIT Madras Research Park has been identified and that no timeline has been made public; it attributes the Rs 10,000 crore and 1,000 jobs figures to press reports. No megawatt or GPU figure has been given. (MediaNama)

Why Chennai

JLL points to Chennai's submarine cable landings, reliable power, Tamil Nadu's renewable energy commitment and low construction costs. (JLL)

W.Media reported five cable landing stations in Chennai with three more planned, and JLL notes a new Bharti Airtel cable that adds 220 Tbps when it goes live in 2026. (W.Media, JLL, Chennai data centre market H1 2025)

What the state offers

The Tamil Nadu Data Centre Policy 2021 covered data centres set up from 1 Apr 2021 to 31 Mar 2026. It gave a full electricity tax subsidy for five years, stamp duty relief on land from state agencies, and dual power supply for data centres of 50 MW or more. (ELCOT, W.Media)

That policy's period ended on 31 Mar 2026, and we have not found a successor policy yet. We will update this page when one is announced.

For startups, the Tamil Nadu Startup Data Server Services Scheme gives up to Rs 5 lakh a year in data centre services; the state says 75 startups have received Rs 1.80 crore under it. (Deccan Chronicle)

In August 2026 the state announced its own Rs 10 crore GPU cluster for entrepreneurs, and the 2026-27 Policy Note proposes Tamil Nadu AI Vision, a government company that would sell computing for a fee. (YourStory (PTI), DT Next)

The government's own State Data Centre runs in two phases; the second holds 135 racks. (IT and Digital Services Department, Policy Note 2025-26)
