Can AI assistants find your Tamil Nadu business? A checklist
AI search tools answer questions like "good physiotherapy clinic near Tambaram" from what they can find and read about you: your business listings and your website. Google says there is no special trick for its AI features; the basics decide. This checklist covers seven free steps, each from the official guidance of Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and others.

1. Claim your free Google Business Profile
Adding or claiming a Google Business Profile costs nothing. Once you add and verify it, customers can find your business on Google Search and Google Maps. (Google Business Profile Help)
Start at business.google.com/add. If your shop is already on Maps but not claimed, find it on Google Maps, choose "Claim this business" and pick a verification option. (Google Business Profile Help)
Verifying is what gives you control of the profile. Google may offer verification by phone, text, email, video or postcard, but Google decides which methods you get, and reviews can take up to five working days. (Google Business Profile Help)
2. Fill it in fully, and keep it right
Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and how well-known a business is. It advises filling in your address, hours (including special hours), category and attributes, and warns that wrong or outdated details can keep you out of relevant local searches. (Google Business Profile Help)
Reviews help: Google says more reviews and good ratings can help local ranking, and replying to them shows customers you value their feedback. Add photos of your shop, work or premises. (Google Business Profile Help)
Nobody can pay Google or ask it for a better local ranking. Be wary of anyone who promises one. (Google Business Profile Help)
3. Put your website into Google Search Console
Google Search Console is a free Google service that shows how your site appears in Google Search, which pages are indexed, and what to fix. Your site can appear in Google without it, but you will not see the problems. (Search Console Help, Google Search Central)
Verify that you own the site by uploading an HTML file, adding an HTML tag, using Google Analytics or Tag Manager, or adding a DNS record. A DNS record is the only way to verify the whole domain. (Search Console Help)
Then submit your sitemap: paste its address into the Sitemaps report and click Submit. A sitemap helps Google find pages but does not guarantee they will be indexed, and many website builders make one for you. (Search Console Help, Google Search Central)
4. Know what Google says about AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode; normal search basics still apply. To be shown as a link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and Google does not guarantee inclusion. (Google Search Central: AI features and your website)
In practice: make sure your robots.txt file and your hosting company do not block crawling, put important details such as services, prices and hours in text rather than only in images, and link your pages to each other. (Google Search Central: AI features and your website)
Visits from these AI features are counted in the normal Search Console Performance report, so you do not need a separate tool to see them. (Google Search Central: AI features and your website)
5. Tell machines who you are, in a format they read
LocalBusiness structured data is a small block of code on your website that tells Google your business name, address, phone, hours and more. Name and address are required. Whatever it says must match what visitors can see on the page. (Google Search Central: LocalBusiness structured data, Google Search Central: AI features and your website)
Test it with Google's free Rich Results Test and fix any critical errors before you rely on it. (Google Search Central: LocalBusiness structured data)
6. Make the site fast on a phone
PageSpeed Insights checks how a page performs on mobile and desktop and suggests fixes, using real visits from Chrome users in the past 28 days where there is enough data. (Google for Developers: About PageSpeed Insights)
A page counts as good when its main content loads in 2.5 seconds or less, it responds to a tap in 200 milliseconds or less, and its layout barely shifts (a score of 0.1 or less). Google strongly recommends reaching these scores. (Google for Developers: About PageSpeed Insights, Google Search Central: Core Web Vitals)
7. Cover Bing and the AI search tools too
Microsoft tells local businesses to register with Bing Places for Business, where you claim or update your listing in Bing Maps, because accurate details matter when AI answers mention a business. (Bing Webmaster Blog, Microsoft Support)
If you already use Google Search Console, you can import your site into Bing Webmaster Tools in a few clicks, which verifies it and brings your sitemap across. Its AI Performance report, in preview since February 2026, shows how often your site is cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries. (Bing Webmaster Blog, Bing Webmaster Blog)
Check that your robots.txt does not block the crawlers AI search tools use. OpenAI says a site that blocks OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers; Perplexity says PerplexityBot links sites in its results and is not used for training; Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may make a site less visible in Claude's search results. (Claude, made by Anthropic, drafts theTN.ai.) (OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers, Perplexity Docs: Perplexity crawlers, Claude Help Center)
OpenAI and Anthropic use separate crawlers for training and for search, so you can block training and still allow search. (OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers, Claude Help Center)
