How to get GPU and cloud credits for an AI startup in Tamil Nadu
A Tamil Nadu AI startup has two working routes to cheaper computing today. The state's Startup Data Server Services Scheme gives up to Rs 5 lakh a year in data centre services to startups registered with StartupTN and iTNT Hub. The central IndiaAI Compute Portal rents GPUs at subsidised rates. A Rs 10 crore state GPU cluster has been announced but is not open yet.
Route 1: Tamil Nadu's Startup Data Server scheme
The Tamil Nadu Startup Data Server Services Scheme gives vouchers for data centre services worth up to Rs 5 lakh for each startup registered with iTNT Hub and StartupTN. ELCOT runs it, with Rs 10 crore set aside. (iTNT Hub newsletter, March 2025)
The state's 2026-27 IT Policy Note puts the support at up to Rs 5 lakh a year, and says 75 startups have received Rs 1.80 crore so far. (Deccan Chronicle)
The sources we could read do not list exactly which services count. If you need GPUs or cloud computing, ask iTNT Hub or StartupTN whether your provider and plan qualify, and whether the scheme has money left for 2026-27, before you plan around it.
Route 2: the IndiaAI Compute Portal
The IndiaAI Compute Portal lets startups, students, researchers and MSMEs rent cloud GPUs at subsidised rates. You log in with DigiLocker, e-Pramaan or Jan Parichay, register, and request compute with a draft bill that includes your subsidy request. (IndiaAI Compute Portal)
Startups and MSMEs need DPIIT recognition, AI or machine learning experience, and either Rs 50 lakh in revenue or Rs 1 crore in funding. Students, researchers and early-stage founders have their own criteria on the portal. (IndiaAI Compute Portal)
Coming later: the state GPU cluster
In August 2026 the state announced its own GPU computing cluster, worth Rs 10 crore, to give AI services to entrepreneurs. Its access rules have not been published. (YourStory (PTI))
We will add how to apply when the state publishes it. The AI data centres guide tracks the wider build-out of AI computing in Chennai.
