The deal covers CPU computing; the announcement does not mention GPUs. Akamai's cloud runs across thousands of locations. Akamai expects to spend about USD 5.5 billion on equipment for it.
What the two companies agreed
Akamai announced on 24 Sep 2026 that Anthropic has committed USD 11.6 billion over seven years to use Akamai Cloud. Anthropic will use Akamai's distributed servers and software for the growth of its CPU workloads. The release does not mention GPUs.
The commitment can grow by up to USD 9 billion more, which would take it to about USD 20 billion in total. Akamai said the deal adds to more than USD 2.8 billion in multi-year cloud commitments from other customers that it announced earlier in 2026.
The warrant and the spending
As part of the deal, Akamai gave Anthropic a warrant for non-voting preferred stock equal to 7.7 million common shares, or up to about 5% of Akamai's shares, at USD 111.33 per share. About 2% vests with the USD 11.6 billion commitment. The rest vests at about 1% for each extra USD 3 billion of cloud services Anthropic buys.
Akamai expects to spend about USD 5.5 billion on equipment for the deal. It plans to raise its 2026 capital spending by about USD 1.7 billion to buy parts such as memory in advance. It said the deal does not change its 2026 revenue forecast.
Background
Akamai says its cloud runs across thousands of points of presence, from central sites out to the network edge. Its co-founder and CEO, Tom Leighton, said Akamai was thrilled that Anthropic chose it to build and run AI infrastructure at scale. The release quotes no one from Anthropic.
Why it matters in Tamil Nadu
It shows that running AI agents needs ordinary CPU servers as well as GPUs, a useful point for anyone planning data-centre or cloud capacity.
