At DevDay 2026, OpenAI let Codex run in the cloud and from a phone, refreshed the Codex command-line tool, and released GPT-6.1 Sol.
The updated Codex CLI and a new code review feature for GitHub and GitLab are open to all plans. OpenAI also announced an Agents API with computer use and a Decisions API for classification and routing.
What changed in Codex
OpenAI held DevDay 2026 on 29 Sep 2026 and announced more than 20 items, Unite.AI reported. Codex, its coding agent, can now run on your computer, remotely from a phone, or in the cloud from any device. Reusable work environments carry over approved settings and permissions. Cloud Codex is listed for Plus, Pro, Business, Healthcare, Education and Enterprise plans.
The Codex command-line tool gained voice input and an /agents view for handing out and tracking several tasks at once. A new Code Review feature in the ChatGPT desktop app takes an automatic first pass on code changes and posts feedback to GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests. Unite.AI says both are on all plans.
A separate tool, Codex Security Cloud, scans GitHub repositories, checks what it finds and prepares fixes. It is for Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users.
The new model
GPT-6.1 Sol updates GPT-6 Sol for coding, computer use and professional work. OpenAI says it comes close to GPT-6 Astra on several tests at about one-fifth of Astra's standard price.
In the API it costs USD 2 per million input tokens and USD 10 per million output tokens, with cached input at USD 0.10 per million. It is in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users.
New tools for developers
The Agents API now supports computer use, so apps can operate software through its on-screen interface. It also brings in Codex features such as multiple agents, tool search and context compaction. Unite.AI says it is available through the API, and in Codex and ChatGPT Work on Pro 500 and Enterprise plans.
The Decisions API uses OpenAI's smaller Luna model to pick from a fixed set of answers. It suits jobs like sorting content, routing requests or choosing an agent's next step. It started in limited preview, with a wider release planned in the coming days.
Some developers praised computer use, cloud Codex and cheaper models, InfoQ reported. Others asked whether the releases were big steps beyond existing agent platforms.
How to try it
- On any ChatGPT plan, use the refreshed Codex command-line tool, which now has voice input and an /agents view, according to Unite.AI.
- Use Code Review from the ChatGPT desktop app. It reviews your changes in the cloud and posts feedback on GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests.
- To run Codex in the cloud or remotely from a phone, you need a Plus, Pro, Business, Healthcare, Education or Enterprise plan.
- Developers can call GPT-6.1 Sol in the API with the model ID gpt-6.1-sol, at USD 2 per million input tokens and USD 10 per million output tokens.
How to get good results
Our practical advice, based on what the sources below say about it.
- Treat Code Review as a first passOpenAI describes it as an automatic first pass on your changes. Read the diff and the feedback yourself before you merge.
- Split big jobs with /agentsThe /agents view in the Codex command-line tool lets you hand out several tasks and track them in one place.
- Reuse prompts to cut API costCached input for GPT-6.1 Sol costs USD 0.10 per million tokens, against USD 2 for fresh input. Keeping repeated instructions the same can lower your bill.
- Wait before building on the Decisions APIIt is in limited preview and only picks from a fixed set of answers. Use it for sorting or routing tasks, not open-ended replies.
- Check your plan firstCloud Codex is not listed for the Free or Go plans, and the Agents API with computer use is listed for Pro 500 and Enterprise in Codex and ChatGPT Work.
Why it matters in Tamil Nadu
Students and small teams on any ChatGPT plan can try the new Codex CLI and code review to check their own projects.
