The state budget plans a Tamil large language model, to be built by the Tamil Virtual Academy.

What the budget says

Finance Minister N Marie Wilson presented the Revised Budget Estimates for 2026-27 in the Assembly on 5 Aug 2026. DT Next describes it as the TVK government's first budget.

One of its measures is a Tamil Large Language Model. The Tamil Virtual Academy will lead the project.

What the model is meant to do

The state listed four aims: stronger Tamil computing, AI-powered language tools, better translation, and wider use of Tamil on new digital platforms.

Wilson said the plan reflects a vision of keeping Tamil "a language of the future through innovation and technology." She added that Tamil should be more than a language of history and literature, and should be ready for fast changes in technology.

Other Tamil measures in the budget

The same budget announced a Rs 5,000 cash reward for 500 students who learn 300 Thirukkural couplets by heart, and a yearly Quaid-e-Millat Award for work on Tamil development.

It also plans study tours for students to the archaeological sites of Keezhadi, Adichanallur and Kodumanal, more financial help for Tamil scholars, and essay and speech contests across the state.

What is not known yet

DT Next does not report how much money is set aside for the model, when it will be ready, or which partners will help build it. No next steps were named for the other measures either.
