Sarvam AI opened a Dubbing API that translates audio and video into Indian languages while keeping each speaker's voice.

Sarvam says it supports 12 Indian languages and returns a dubbed video, an audio track and subtitles. The starter price is Rs 40 per minute of source media for each target language.

What the API does

Sarvam AI's Dubbing API takes a video or audio file and dubs it into other languages. It clones each original speaker's voice, so the dubbed version keeps how they sound. It is the programming version of the Dubbing workspace in Sarvam's Creator Studio.

One job can dub into several target languages at once and produce every export you ask for. The outputs are a dubbed video, a separate audio track and an SRT subtitle file. Sarvam lists 12 Indian target languages, with Hindi and Tamil among its examples, and offers 15 preset voices.

Files and limits

It accepts video in MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, FLV and WMV, and audio in WAV, MP3 and M4A. A file must be at least one second long and contain speech you can hear.

On the default Starter plan, files can be up to 2 GB and one hour long. Pro allows 3 GB and one hour. Business allows 4 GB and four hours.

What it costs

Sarvam bills per second of source media, multiplied by the number of target languages. On Starter, the standard rate is Rs 40 per minute. So a 10-minute video dubbed into three languages is billed as 30 minutes.

A setting called editor_flow is meant for the Creator Studio editor, not normal API use. Turning it on doubles the Starter rate to Rs 80 per minute and switches off automatic export. With it on, Sarvam lists Rs 75 per minute on Pro and Rs 72 on Enterprise.

How to try it

  1. Generate an API key in the Sarvam AI dashboard under Key Management.
  2. Install the Python SDK with pip install sarvamai (version 0.1.31a1 or newer for the upload helper) and set the SARVAM_API_KEY environment variable.
  3. Create a dubbing job with your source language and target languages. You get back a job ID and a short-lived upload link.
  4. Upload your file to that link, start the job, and check its live status until it finishes.
  5. Ask for the export status to get a download link for each language and format.

How to get good results

Our practical advice, based on what the sources below say about it.

  1. Dub into several languages in one jobYou do not need a separate job per language. One job can produce every language and export format you list.
  2. Upload right awayThe upload link is short-lived. If it expires you get a 403 error and must create a new job. Never send your API key to the upload link.
  3. Leave editor_flow off for API workThe default setting keeps the Starter rate at Rs 40 per minute and exports files automatically. Turning it on doubles the Starter cost.
  4. Check each export, not just the jobA job can show as completed while some exports are still rendering. Check the status of each download before you use it.
  5. Send clean speechFiles must be at least one second long with audible speech. Sarvam checks the file after you start the job, and a bad file fails with the reason in error_message.

Why it matters in Tamil Nadu

Teachers, creators and small businesses can test dubbing a video into several Indian languages with an Indian provider priced in rupees.
