Models · Mistral AI · 6 Oct 2026
Mistral opened a public preview of Mistral Large 4, a 1-trillion-parameter open-weight model, and said the weights will follow by the end of October.
The model has 52 billion active parameters and reads text and images. The preview API costs USD 1.36 per million input tokens and USD 4.18 per million output tokens. Mistral has not yet named the licence.
What Mistral released
Mistral AI opened a public preview of Mistral Large 4 on 6 Oct 2026, through a preview API on Mistral Studio. Its documentation lists 1.05 trillion total parameters, rounded to 1 trillion in the launch post. The model reads images as well as text.
Mistral trained it from scratch on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in its European data centres. The training data covers more than 160 languages, including every official EU language. Reinforcement learning is still under way, and Mistral expects further gains over the coming weeks and months.
Price and early results
The preview costs USD 1.36 per million input tokens and USD 4.18 per million output tokens. BetaNews reports that the documentation also lists a launch sale at USD 0.68 and USD 2.09.
All benchmark results so far come from Mistral and are preliminary. It reports 61.7% on DeepSWE v1.1, an agentic coding test, just ahead of GLM-5.3 at 61%. It reports 67% on FinWorkBench, a finance test, matching DeepSeek-V4-Pro, and 42% on Dense 200 for visual grounding. Co-founder Guillaume Lample called it "by far the strongest open-weight model from the US or Europe" in a post on X.
What is still unknown
The weights are due by the end of October 2026. After that, people will be able to download the model and run it on their own hardware. Mistral has not named the licence, the context window or the hardware needed. It says architecture details will come with the weights.
Sources also differ on active parameters: BetaNews says the documentation lists 52 billion, while Mistral's launch post said 49 billion. Separately, Mistral is giving cybersecurity partners and state authorities private access with reduced moderation.
How to try it
- Use the preview API on Mistral Studio, where Mistral opened access on 6 Oct 2026.
- Budget at USD 1.36 per million input tokens and USD 4.18 per million output tokens. The documentation lists a launch sale at USD 0.68 and USD 2.09.
- To run it yourself, wait for the open weights, due by the end of October 2026, and read the licence when Mistral publishes it.
How to get good results
Our practical advice, based on what the sources below say about it.
- Treat the scores as earlyEvery benchmark figure so far is Mistral's own and preliminary, and reinforcement learning is still running. Test the model on your own tasks before you switch.
- Start with the areas Mistral highlightsMistral points to cybersecurity, finance, law and visual grounding as its strengths. Begin your tests there to see if its claims hold for your work.
- Send images as well as textThe model reads images. Mistral reports 42% on the Dense 200 visual grounding test, one point above GPT-6 Astra at 41%.
- Check hardware and licence before self-hostingMistral has not yet said what hardware the model needs or which licence the weights will use. Check both when the weights arrive, before you plan a deployment.
Why it matters in Tamil Nadu
Once the weights are out, companies that must keep data on their own servers will have one more large model to consider, though running it needs serious GPU hardware.
