Google DeepMind and GovTech Singapore built an on-device Gemma model that warns users about scams in private chats.

A lightweight Gemma model, fine-tuned on local scam chats, runs on the phone, so neither Google nor the Singapore Government can read the messages. A fast classifier screens first, then Gemma reads multi-turn chats and warns the user. Rollout will be phased and needs consent. Scams are over half of reported crime in Singapore.

Why it matters in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu builders can study this design, a small model fine-tuned on local scams that keeps data on the device, for scams in their own languages.
