What was announced
IIT Madras announced the first close of the IIT Madras Unicorn Frontier Fund I, a venture capital fund for deep-tech startups. IIT Madras Research Park and Unicorn India Ventures launched the fund. The news came on 26 Sep 2026 at Sangam 2026, the IIT Madras Alumni Association's yearly conference, held in Bengaluru.
The fund targets a corpus of Rs 600 to 1,000 crore. The institute says alumni investments are more than Rs 150 crore. It does not say how much was raised at the first close.
How the fund works
It is a 10+2-year fund. About 60% of the money will go into building the portfolio, and the rest is kept for follow-on rounds. It will back early-stage, IP-led engineering startups at Technology Readiness Levels 3 to 4, in robotics, space tech, defence tech and semiconductors.
A large share of deals will come from the IIT Madras ecosystem and the rest from the wider Indian deep-tech scene. Natarajan Malupillai, Group CEO of IIT Madras Research Park and Incubation Cell, said the fund will support 24 to 30 companies.
Why IIT Madras set it up
At Sangam the year before, IIT Madras said it planned to help start a deep-tech fund. It said it needed an investment partner to help promising technologies grow into products and companies.
Dean Ashwin Mahalingam said the fund will help close the gap in patient capital that deep-tech startups need. Director V. Kamakoti announced the startups selected for funding at the event.
Why it matters in Tamil Nadu
Deep-tech startups that come from or are backed by the IIT Madras ecosystem get a new source of long-term early-stage funding.
