IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti told ANI that the institute is preparing a white paper on how AI will affect jobs sector by sector and what reskilling workers will need. He also called for global agreement on AI standards. The institute is partnering with Better India on 500 videos about real-world AI uses.
What IIT Madras announced
IIT Madras Director Veezhinathan Kamakoti said the institute will release a white paper on AI. He spoke to the news agency ANI in Chennai on 22 Oct 2026, on the sidelines of AI Governance 2026, according to a report carried by The Tribune.
The paper will cover three things: global standards and governance for AI, the effect of AI on jobs across sectors, and reskilling so that workers can move into new roles. Kamakoti called it "a very important white paper". The report gives no release date.
He said the work divides the economy into sectors to see which ones AI will affect, and what workers in those sectors would need to learn to move to other sectors.
Standards, videos and data centres
Kamakoti said AI has become all-pervasive and that the institute is looking at "four or five important aspects". On standards, he argued that mistakes in one part of the world can have far-reaching effects elsewhere, so countries need to agree on AI standards and governance.
IIT Madras is also partnering with Better India to raise public awareness of AI. The partnership will produce 500 videos from different segments, showing applications where AI has improved quality of life.
Kamakoti added that the institute is setting up large data centres. He said it can train models up to some number of parameters. The report gives no capacity figures or timeline.
The announcement came at the Industry Conclave on AI Governance, run by IIT Madras's Centre for Responsible AI. theTN.ai has covered the conclave separately.
Why it matters in Tamil Nadu
Students and employers in Tamil Nadu may get a sector-wise view of which jobs AI will change and what reskilling can follow, once the paper is published.
