The Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras is hosting a one-day conclave titled "AI Measurement and Governance". Researchers, industry people and policy experts will discuss how to measure the performance, safety and accountability of AI. The event also includes a startup showcase and workshops.
What the conclave covers
IIT Madras's Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI), part of the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, is organising the Industry Conclave on AI Governance 2026, according to DT Next. The theme is "AI Measurement and Governance". It looks at how the performance, safety and accountability of AI systems can be measured so they can be used responsibly.
Prof Balaraman Ravindran, who heads both the school and CeRAI, is quoted as saying: "Governance that isn't grounded in measurement remains a statement of intent, not a practice." He stressed careful evaluation so that AI systems are fair, safe and robust.
The programme has two keynotes. Prof Gopal Ramchurn of the University of Southampton, who is also CEO of Responsible AI UK, will speak on accountability for autonomous systems, including tracing their actions and reducing risks. Prof Mohan Kankanahalli, director of the NUS AI Institute at the National University of Singapore, warns that fast progress in AI could make benchmarks obsolete.
Sessions, startups and workshops
Prof Ravindran will hold a fireside chat with Rahul Matthan, a partner at Trilegal. A panel on AI and consumer rights will include representatives of the Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group, Razorpay, the National University of Juridical Sciences and Google India.
Startups that work on AI evaluation, observability, compliance and governance will show their products. CeRAI will also present its research and open-source tools, and run hands-on workshops on responsible AI frameworks. DT Next says a new research initiative will be launched and a paper announced at the event.
Another event listing gives the date as 22 Oct 2026, from 9 am to 5.30 pm, at the TTJ Auditorium and halls in the ICSR building at IIT Madras. DT Next does not say how to register or what it costs; theTN.ai's events page links to the organiser's registration form.
